Graduated Pair of George III Sterling Silver Meat Domes
Parker & Wakelin, London, 1776

Each shaped oval with gadrooned border and loop handle. Lengths 12 inches (30 cm) and 13 inches (33 cm), total approximately 62 ounces.

The arms are those of the Earl of Derby as bourne by Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby (1752-1834), who in 1774 married Lady Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton. Edward became Earl of Derby in 1776 on the death of his grandfather and these domes were probably part of his new silver service. His grandson, also named Edward Smith-Stanley (1799-1869), the 14th Earl of Derby, served as Great Britain's Prime Minister three different times between 1852 and 1868, and his great grandson, Frederick Arthur Stanley (1841-1908), the 16th Earl of Derby, was General Governor of Canada from 1888 to 1893 and donated the Stanley Cup to the Championship hockey team.
