Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue was one of the most celebrated Haitian painters of the 20th century, internationally exhibited and represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, after early acclaim at Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince. Self-taught, he developed a distinctive style blending naïve art and surrealism, often juxtaposing flowers, mountains, skeletal trees, and spiritual symbolism to evoke the emotional and subconscious realities of Haitian life.
