This painting is closely related to a portrait of the sitter's mother, Elizabeth, Lady Pelham (ca. 1664-1681), also attributed to the studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller, now hanging in the Red Saloon at Raynham Hall, the Townshend family seat in Norfolk.

Wax relined. Very dense varnish layer, showing very little under UV light. Some contours and shadows reinforced.
