George IV White Statuary Marble Fireplace Surround
Second quarter 19th century
The molded rectangular shelf above a frieze centered by a panel carved with a scene of putti and women and flanked by female masks with flowered headdresses and scrolling foliage, the uprights with veiled female caryatids after the antique above acanthus leaves and palmettes and ending in molded plinths. Height 49 1/2 inches (125.8 cm), width 68 inches (172.7 cm), depth 12 inches (30.5 cm), height of opening 33 1/4 inches (84.5 cm), width 42 inches (106.7 cm).
The veiled heads of the caryatids relate to the design of a plaster bust of Madame Recamier by Antonio Canova executed in 1813. Canova gave a marble bust to Juliette Recamier, which is in St. Peter's Palace, Lyon; for the plaster model see E. Bassi, La Gipsoteca di Possagno, Venezia, 1957, p. 214, fig. 234.
Similar fireplace surrounds have sold, Sotheby's, New York, October 26, 2002, lot 1926, and another, Christie's, London, July 1, 2004, lot 61. A related fireplace surround is found in the Red Room of the White House in Washington, D. C.

Good quality, well carved, some elements associated, shelf with minor areas of discoloration and staining, chips to edges, possibly lacking elements above heads of term figures, minor chips to term figures, minor chips to terms, top piece of chimney opening broken and repaired hearth stone later, areas of adhesive residue to frieze; in need of gentle surface cleaning.
