Estate / Collection: Property of a Long Island Private Collection
Circa 1870, Rome,
The rectangular plaque centering a circular micromosaic depicting a pastoral scene, within a red tesserea border, two female figures are shown before a thatched hut, one standing with a basket of provisions, the other seated besided a flock of sheeps, a donkey stands nearby, and rolling hills and a distant tower complete the background.
Measurement of plaque without frame 10 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches, (27 x 27 cm).
This subject is after the Milanese painter and engraver Franceso Londonio (1723-1783) and is characteristic of the Grand Tour souveniers collected by affluent European travellers in the 18th and 19th Century, combined with the technical virtuosity and density of the tesserea, suggests manufacture by one of the leading Roman Vatican workshops active during the period.
