This painting is in very good condition.
The oak panel has been restored and is in stable condition. There are two horizontal joins extending the entire width of the panel that have been reinforced with dovetail inserts on the reverse. There is a small repair to the panel at the top right corner that is visible when the painting is viewed from the back.
The paint layer is clean and stable. A thin line of retouching that corresponds with the two major horizontal joins in the panel is visible under inspection with ultraviolet light. There is a 6-inch line of retouching located 1 inch from the bottom left edge and a slight diagonal retouch continuing to the center of the bottom edge. There is a 12-inch thin line of retouching in the top right edge continuing in a slight diagonal to the center of the top edge. There are small retouches within the shadows of the pheasant; in the dark shadows of the pewter plates; and in the white tablecloth. There are several small dots of retouching throughout the thinly painted background and small retouches in all four corners of the painting. The many small, well-executed restorations are still quite effective.

Auction: Old Master Paintings / English & Continental Silver, Furniture and Decorative Arts, May 20, 2025
NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction on May 20, 2025 saw strong results for 19th Century & Old Master Paintings & Drawings spanning the Italian Renaissance through the early 19th century. The sale showcased a wide range of landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious and mythological subjects.
Highlighting the sale was an 18th century French School view of Ships Loading Cargo in a Mediterranean Harbor estimated at $2,500-5,000 that achieved a stunning $38,500. Property of a Distinguished European Collector, the painting depicted a fantastical scene of sailing ships in a harbor surrounded by classical ruins.
The selection of Old Master drawings in the sale featured Studies of a Juvenile Spoonbill, Greenfinch, and Butterfly by Vincenzo Leonardi (Italian, 1589-1657) that sold to a private collector for $20,460, many times its $3,000-5,000 estimate. Consigned by the Estate of Joanne duPont Foster, the watercolor had a distinguished and lengthy provenance dating back to the prominent Roman collector Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657). It was later sold to Pope Clement XI in 1703, and eventually to King George III of England in 1762, leaving the royal collection during the reign of King Edward VII.
