HEMINGWAY, ERNEST
A Farewell to Arms. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First edition of the trade issue, first issue without the disclaimer to p. [x]. Publisher's cloth, in the first issue dust jacket with "Katharine Barclay" in the front flap text and the $2.50 price present. 7 3/4 x 5 inches (19 x 12.5 cm); 355 pp. Minor wear to cloth with spine ends softened, slight lean to spine and bow to boards, jacket lightly rubbed and toned with some edge wear but no losses, pale spotting to endpapers, flyleaf with faint ink stamp, altogether an uncommonly fine copy.
In condition such as this, the first trade edition is quite rare. Hemingway's great novel of WWI is considered one of the best of the era, and the Art Deco jacket (by Cleon) is an icon of modern literature. Hanneman A8.a; Grissom A.8.1a.
