First written in French by Beckett (a customary practice of his), this is the initial work in what would become a trilogy. It did not appear in English until 1955, translated jointly by Beckett and Patrick Bowles. The recipients noted on the title are the noted New York University Beckett scholar--and close friend of the author--Tom Bishop and his wife Helen.
