NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of Prints and Multiples on October 31, 2024 saw spirited bidding drive strong prices and a sale total that topped $1.6 million with an exceptional 91% sold. Bidders from coast to coast and abroad vied for fine examples of Old Master prints, Modern European prints, American prints and works by Contemporary artists, in addition to ceramics by Pablo Picasso.

Andy Warhol – A World Auction Record!
Highlighting the sale was Andy Warhol’s 1986 color screenprint of the famed sharpshooter Annie Oakley that shot past its estimate of $50,000-70,000 to achieve $140,200 – A World Auction Record for the Print. Growing up in the 1930s and 40s, Warhol was captivated by Western films. His Cowboys and Indians series of 1986 features ten prints that portray idealized representations of "Cowboys" and "Indians," emphasizing their roles in popular culture rather than historical accuracy. Warhol’s portrait of Oakley is based on a cabinet card photograph taken in London, circa 1890.

David Hockney
Also noteworthy were two color lithographs by David Hockney that surpassed their respective estimates. Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Crayon and Two Blue Washes, 1978-80, estimated at $70,000-100,000, realized $127,500, and Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book, 1980, estimated at $30,000-40,000, sold for $48,000. Both works were from the Estate of LeGrand Mellon. Read More.

Two additional World Auction Records were set at the sale. Martin Lewis’ rare 1933 drypoint and aquatint, Lost Railroad, sold for a record $11,520, and Joan Miró’s color etching and aquatint, 1979, Grans Rupestres VI, fetched a record $8,960. Other stellar results include Wassily Kandinsky’s 1923 color lithograph, Fröhlicher Aufstieg, which sold for $51,200.
