NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle presented an auction of Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints on October 19, 2023 that saw spirited bidding on a wide range of works from prominent collections and distinguished estates. Offerings included landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.

Highlighting the sale was a Flemish portrait of a soldier dating to around 1500 that attracted determined trans-Atlantic competition, driving the painting far over its $3,000-5,000 estimate to achieve $75,600. Once thought to be by the Antwerp master Quentin Massys, although now believed to be by an unrecorded artist of the period, it came with a solid publication history and a distinguished provenance from the family of the Earls Amherst. One remarkable feature was its elaborate frame ornamented with carved military paraphernalia, which was added to the piece around 1810 when it was presented as a gift to Lord Jeffrey Amherst.
