Dirty varnish; frame rubbing; scattered areas of paint separation, mainly in the black and brick red pigments and in the man's head, as well as a few spots of bitumen damage; no apparent restoration.
Remnant Weiss Galleries, New York label affixed to the reverse, dated 2-6-40.
Frame rub with associated wear to the edges. Scattered areas of paint separation, most noticeable around the lower half of the work. Minor bitumen damage. No apparent restoration visible under UV light inspection.

Among the highlights were Belarusian artist Grigory Gluckmann's (1898-1973) masterful Nude in Repose from 1934 that achieved $25,600, far over its $5,000-8,000 estimate; Indian artist Krishnaji Howlaji Ara's (1913-1985) watercolor and ink Seated Nude with Plant that soared past its estimate of $2,500-4,500 to realize $23,040; and French artist Maurice Brianchon's (1899-1979) Bastille Day, depicting a village street festooned for the fête nationale, estimated at $1,500-2,500 that sold for an exceptional $14,080.
