Russian Parcel-Gilt Silver and Cloisonné Enamel Icon of Christ Pantocrator

Rectangular, Christ depicted half-length, raising his right hand in a blessing and holding champlevé enameled Gospels in his left, the riza with wirework scrolls on a turquoise enamel ground, the halo with a turquoise and blue enamel cross alternating with panels of varicolored flowers and foliage, all within a frame enameled with varicolored flowers and foliage within turquoise pellet borders, the corners with crosses. Height 8 7/8 inches (22.5 cm), width 7 1/4 inches (18.4 cm).

Born to a German baronial family in Novo-Aleksandrovsk, Russian Empire (now in Lithuania), Wrangel was a general who led the White forces in the final phase of the Russian Civil War (1918–20). During World War I, Wrangel served in the Russian imperial guards and became commander of a Cossack division. After the February Revolution of 1917, which overthrew the Romanov dynasty, he continued to serve in the army, resigning his commission and leaving for Crimea when General Lavr Kornilov, whom he supported, was arrested in August 1917 for attempting to overthrow the provisional government.
After the October Revolution, Wrangel joined the White forces of General Anton Denikin and was given command of an army, capturing Tsaritsyn (now Volgograd) in the summer of 1919. Following Denikin’s resignation in April 1920, after the Whites were forced back into the Crimea, Wrangel succeeded Denikin as commander of the White armies. Attempting to rally the support of the peasants, Cossacks, and western allies, Wrangel launched a new offensive in the Ukraine in June 1920. However, by November the Red Army had defeated the Whites, who were forced to retreat into Crimea and were evacuated to Constantinople. Wrangel successfully evacuated Russia and lived in exile in western Europe, dying in Brussels, Belgium in 1928.

NEW YORK, NY – Doyle's auction on October 16, 2024 drew international competition for Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints. Determined bidders on both sides of the Atlantic vied for landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and religious and mythological subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.
Highlighting the sale was an early 18th century nautical painting by Dutch artist Adriaen van Salm (1660-1720) that achieved $127,500. Old Master drawings featured a beautifully executed rendering in brown ink and wash from the Collection of Eldo Netto depicting Archers in a Landscape that soared past its estimate to realize $32,000 amid speculation that it was possibly by the 17th century French master Claude Lorrain.
