CALLAHAN, HARRY (1912-1999)
[Untitled-Sky Bar]. Vintage gelatin silver print, 6 3/8 x 8 1/2 inches (170 x 214 mm), a contact print, signed in ink verso. Tones slightly mellowed with age.
This image can be dated to 1945 (the movie marquee is showing Appointment in Tokyo, on general release that year) and is of the Orpheum Theater in New York. 1945 was the year Callahan took a seminal trip to the city, visiting with Minor White, Lisette Model, Berenice Abbott, Paul Strand and many others, a trip he described as a "personal fellowship." The print does not fluoresce under UV, and so was probably printed very shortly thereafter (brighteners appear in almost all papers post-1950-55). Though not stated on the print, originating from the collection of Gyorgy Kepes.
