DoyleNext: Contemporary Collector

NEW YORK, NY -- The DoyleNext: Contemporary Collector auction returns to for its fourth installment. Featured in the sale is a vibrant vintage boombox by Kenny Scharf, circa 1985, adorned with his signature ectomorphic characters and decoupaged with random plastic toys and baubles. Also featured are two Shadow Portrait works on paper by Street Art godfather Richard Hambleton, three screen prints on wood from Shepard Fairey’s Money series, and a large assortment of original works on canvas and paper by graffiti legend SEEN.

A British artist and illustrator, Sue Coe lived and worked in New York City during the last quarter of the 20th century. Tirelessly tackling socio-political issues throughout her career, the two works included in this sale are fantastic examples of not only her politics, but her artistic prowess. Featured in the September 2006 issue of beloved comics anthology Blab!, Coe’s Please Help Us documents the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in a Goya-esque setting of nature wreaking havoc on humans and animals alike. Coe’s 9-11 is similarly a sobering depiction of the tragic scene; twisted metal and scattered survivors littering the landscape. While Coe’s subject matter may be confrontational, her skill and detail capture the grim reality of her subjects.

Making up a large portion of the sale are works by New York graffiti legends including the aforementioned SEEN, as well as a Surrealist work by Lady Pink, a recent canvas by whole-car king BLADE, a collection of tags by the pioneering writer Taki 183, as well as works by Dr. Revolt, QUIK, Ewok One, Ces One and others. Also included are three works on paper by artist Kostas Seremetis, who apprenticed in the studios of Crash, Daze and Ronnie Cutrone, creating a brilliant body of work that captures the raw aggression of graffiti, balanced against Pop Art sensibilities.

Rounding out the sale is an assortment of artists’ editions by some of the best-known names in Contemporary Art. Included are multiples by Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama and KAWS. Also included are open edition offset lithos of works after Jonas Wood, Ai Weiwei, Andy Warhol, Arman and more.
