BRAVO, MANUEL ÁLVAREZ. Los Obstáculos/The Obstacles
, 1929. Gelatin silver print, 10 1/8 x 13 3/8 inches, signed by Bravo and titled in pencil on verso, printed 1980s. Framed.
One of Bravo's most important images, this surreal photograph of wrapped carousel horses, with its enigmatic title, was taken a few years after the end of the armed struggle that had consumed Mexico for a decade and which had upended the social and political norms. Its imagery likely has overtones of that upheaval.
