STEICHEN, EDWARD J. (1879-1973) Brancusi's Endless Column
, 1926. Vintage gelatin silver print on matte paper, 9 7/8 x 8 inches (252 x 222 mm), annotated in an unknown hand in pencil on verso "Eternity as M. Brancusi the sculptor conceives it" Handling crease in upper left quadrant, faint trace of a cropping line in graphite at right.
Brancusi's Endless Column is shown here in Edward Steichen's garden at Voulagis, France. The photographer and sculptor were close friends, having met at Rodin's studio in 1907. This twenty-four foot sculpture was carved from a tree on the grounds. The sculpture was conceived as site-specific, so this photograph, beyond its importance as a Steichen work, is a significant piece of art documentation. Provenance: Didier Imbert F.A., Paris; David Grob; Christien Zervos, Paris; Phillips New York October 25, 2002 ($16,730).
