There is an almost identical giltwood stool, one of a pair, illustrated by Anthony Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, 1968, p. 193, illustration 199. Cf. a design from 1759 with similar low-relief carving for 'A Couch Bed' by Thomas Chippendale, who notes in the description: 'N. B. This Couch was made for an Alcove in Lord Pembroke's House at Whitehall', The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed., 1762, pl. XLVI. Additionally, the scrolled feet relate to similar examples at Nostell Priory and Dumfries House. The thick rails of the underside stained with a yellow wash are found on Chippendale furniture, including a pair of chairs from Moor Park, sold, Sotheby's, New York, Property from the Collection of Ingrao, October 20, 2006, lot 81.
