[TARPON] Tarpon Club By-Laws, Rules, Officer and Members.
Sport P.O., Aransas County, Texas: 1899. Original red cloth lettered in gilt. 6 1/2 x 4 1/8 inches; 48 pp. Name of A.J. Tullock (a member) stamped on the endpapers, and first text leaf.
A very early Texas tarpon-fishing desideratum, showing the organization and membership of the Tarpon Club. This comprised some of the wealthiest sportsmen in the region. As the Post Office required that there be a town in order for an office to be opened, the members created the town of "Sport, Texas," in an area that was without otherwise significant habitation, in order to receive and send mail. But by 1904, the post office closed, and in 1905 the magnificent building housing the Club (which had had 18 bedrooms, servants' quarters, a tramway, a pavilion and an observatory) was torn down.
