Allegory of Love, Innocence and Prudence
Signed Lagrenee and dated 1776 (ll)
Oil on canvas
36 3/8 x 28 3/4 inches (95.5 x 73 cm)
This painting and the one following were probably once part of a series illustrating the Cardinal Virtues of Prudence, Justice, Temperance and Fortitude. This would have illustrated Prudence, here shown with a mirror as her attribute, in reference to the Latin maxim nosce te iipsum, "know thyself."
