London: Whittaker, 1825. First English edition, a publisher's presentation copy with notation to the title, the Littell copy with with booklabel. Two volumes. Early full green morocco gilt by Donnelly (Lakeside Press), top edge gilt, cloth slipcase. 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (21 x 13.5 cm); Folding map with route traced in color, 8 plates, 3 folding tables, 458; 156 pp., without half-titles. Map with short split along one fold, spines faded to brown and chipped, frontispiece and first leaves sprung, foxing to plates but generally clean internally, with the booklabel of Neve and Guy Littell.
The English account of Long's second expedition, one of the earliest reports of the Upper Mississippi. The work "is almost a cyclopædia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory ... their statement regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people" (Field).
