JERDON, THOMAS Illustrations of Indian ornithology: containing fifty figures of new, unfigured and interesting species of birds, chiefly from the South of India.
Madras: printed by P.R, Hunt, American Mission Press, 1847. First edition. Modern three-quarters red morocco gilt. 11 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches (30 x 234.5 cm); title-leaf, plate list, and fifty very fine hand-colored lithographs with accompanying text, species list on leaf at end. Title page annotated by "Major Benson" of the 66th Regiment in 1859, who has annotated the foot of several plates regarding species he has shot and collected. Two text leaves have been clumsily restored, resulting in one offseting to the margins of the adjacent plate.
Jerdon was a medical doctor, who at the outset of his Indian posting (in 1836) was dealing with an outbreak of fever and dysentery among the troops. An enthusiastic naturalist, he studied bird species, the fishes of the Bay of Bengal, Himalayan flora etc., and he published a number of important works. This is his most desirable.
