Lot Details

Lot 1056
Space Project Mercury Astronaut Autographs
Full sheet of the 4 Cent Mercury stamp issued in 1962 to commemorate the achievements of the Mercury project. The bottom right pane with Plate number 27068 autographed by six of the Mercury astronauts. Boldly signed in the margin by John Glenn, Jr. who was the last surviving member of the original seven American "Right Stuff" Mercury astronauts, died December 8th, 2016. Alan Shepard, Jr., "Wally" Schirra, Jr., "Gus" Grissom, "Gordo" Cooper, Jr., M Scott Carpenter. It is believed that the sheet was presented to a Mr. Leslie Williams at a post-mission gathering. He worked as an engineer for one of the subcontractors on the Mercury project, possibly A.B. Dick Co., as is evidenced by the Souvenir Appollo 11 Man on the Moon envelope in which the sheet has been stored for many years. The thin margin strip at left has been folded under when it was placed in the envelope and there is some slight gum loss from improper storage, non of which affects the signatures or the importance of his historic item. Overall Very Fine.
