Irish George II Needlework Upholstered Mahogany Stool
Mid 18th century
The rectangular drop-in seat above a shaped apron, raised on shell-carved cabriole legs with acanthus foliage joined by a shaped stretcher and ending in squared paw feet with claws. Height 18 inches (45.7 cm), width 22 1/2 inches (57 cm), depth 19 inches (48.3 cm).
An almost identical stool with a needlework drop-in seat is illustrated, The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven and London, 2007, p. 219, fig. 60.

With previous restorations, losses, replacements and restorations to veneers, good color, associated needlework with losses and tears throughout, tops of two legs with losses to frieze veneers, brackets and blocks appear to be original, all blocks now with screws, stretcher with age crack and shrinkage, now with shim at join, old marks and scratches, scuffs to seat.
