The Virgin and Child with Saint Elizabeth and Other Members of the Holy Family
Oil on canvas
39 1/2 x 46 1/2 inches (100.5 x 118 cm)
Vincent Sellaer was born in the Flemish town of Mechelen around 1490 and worked there most of his life. The style of his paintings, which is clearly influenced by early Italian Mannerism, suggests that he worked in Italy during the 1520s. This painting represents a favorite subject in the Netherlands, a "Holy Kinship," which shows the Virgin and Child with other members of their extended family.
